FAQs on Index: States of Matter - Chemistry for JEE Main & Advanced

1. What are the three states of matter?
Ans. The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. In a solid, particles are closely packed together and have a fixed shape and volume. In a liquid, particles are loosely packed and can flow, taking the shape of their container. In a gas, particles are widely spaced and can move freely, occupying the entire volume of their container.
2. How does matter change from one state to another?
Ans. Matter can change from one state to another through physical processes such as heating or cooling. When a solid is heated, it gains energy and its particles vibrate faster, eventually melting into a liquid. Further heating turns the liquid into a gas through the process of evaporation or boiling. Cooling a gas causes its particles to slow down, condensing into a liquid. Further cooling solidifies the liquid, forming a solid once again.
3. What is sublimation?
Ans. Sublimation is the process in which a substance directly transitions from a solid to a gas without passing through the liquid state. This occurs when the substance's vapor pressure exceeds the atmospheric pressure at a particular temperature. Examples of substances that undergo sublimation include dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) and mothballs (naphthalene).
4. Can matter exist in more than three states?
Ans. Yes, matter can exist in other states beyond solid, liquid, and gas. Plasma is another state of matter, commonly found in stars or lightning bolts. It consists of highly energized particles that have lost their electrons. Bose-Einstein condensate is a state of matter that occurs at extremely low temperatures near absolute zero, where atoms become a single entity and behave as a wave.
5. How does pressure affect the states of matter?
Ans. Pressure can significantly influence the states of matter. Increasing pressure on a gas can compress its particles, decreasing the space between them and potentially causing the gas to condense into a liquid or solidify into a solid. Conversely, reducing pressure on a liquid can cause it to vaporize and turn into a gas. Pressure has minimal effect on solids as their particles are already densely packed and not easily compressible.
