Mnemonics: Locomotion & Movement | Biology Class 11 - NEET PDF Download

There are  total  206 bones in the human body. It might seem daunting to remember each one, along with their numbers. To simplify this, we'll break down the bones into 2 types of  skeleton & various types of joints and use mnemonics to make memorization easier and more fun. Ready to learn all about your bones in an engaging way? Let's get started!

3. Types of Joints

Mnemonic: "Fibers Can't Stretch, But Hands Prefer Gliding Smoothly"

(i) Fibres= Fibrous Joints: No movement.

  • Example: Cranium (Skull sutures).

(ii) Can't = Cartilaginous Joints: Limited movement.

  • Example: Spine (Between vertebrae).

(iii) Stretch = Synovial Joints: Free movement.

  • But = Ball and Socket: Shoulder (Humerus and pectoral girdle).
  • Hands= Hinge: Knee.
  • Prefer = Pivot: Neck (between atlas and axis).
  • Gliding = Gliding: Wrist (between carpals).
  • Smooth = Saddle: Thumb (between carpal and metacarpal).

FAQs on Mnemonics: Locomotion & Movement - Biology Class 11 - NEET

1. What are the main components of the axial skeleton?
Ans.The axial skeleton consists of 80 bones, including the skull, vertebral column, and rib cage. The skull protects the brain and supports facial structures, the vertebral column provides support and houses the spinal cord, and the rib cage protects the heart and lungs.
2. How many bones are in the appendicular skeleton, and what are its primary functions?
Ans.The appendicular skeleton consists of 126 bones, including the limbs and the girdles (shoulder and pelvic girdles). Its primary functions are to facilitate movement, support the weight of the body, and provide attachment points for muscles.
3. What are the different types of joints found in the human body?
Ans.There are three main types of joints: fibrous joints (immovable), cartilaginous joints (partially movable), and synovial joints (freely movable). Synovial joints are further classified into several subtypes, including hinge, ball-and-socket, and pivot joints, each allowing different ranges of motion.
4. How do joints contribute to locomotion and movement?
Ans.Joints play a crucial role in locomotion and movement by allowing bones to pivot and rotate around each other. This movement is essential for activities such as walking, running, and jumping, as joints provide the flexibility and range of motion needed for effective movement.
5. What are some common joint injuries and their implications for movement?
Ans.Common joint injuries include sprains, strains, and dislocations. These injuries can lead to pain, swelling, and decreased mobility, which can significantly impact a person's ability to perform daily activities and engage in physical exercise. Proper treatment and rehabilitation are essential for recovery.
