World Bee Day


Context: Agriculture Minister Launched Honey Testing Laboratory Project on the Occasion of World Bee Day.

About World Bee Day:

  • May 20 is observed as World Bee Day annually.
  • It was on this day in 1734 that Anton Janša, the pioneer of beekeeping, was born.
  • The United Nations proclaimed May 20 as World Bee Day in 2017. The proposal was put forth by Slovenia.
  • The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping.
  • Bees are very important for the sustenance of life itself. They are major pollinators.
    • Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, pumpkin, tomato, aubergine, papaya, orange, lime, strawberry, apple, mango and many more depend directly or indirectly on bees for pollination.
  • They contribute to food security, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity.
  • World Bee Day 2021 theme: “Bee Engaged – Build Back Better for Bees”.

Context: 12th Founding Day of Competition Commission of India.

INS Rajput


Context: Decommissioning of INS Rajput.

About INS Rajput

  • INS Rajput was the first destroyer of the Indian Navy.
  • It was the lead ship of the Kashin-class destroyers built by the erstwhile USSR. Its original Russian name was ‘Nadezhny’ meaning hope.
  • It was commissioned in 1980.
  • With the motto “Raj Karega Rajput”, the ship was the first Indian Naval ship to be affiliated with a regiment of the Indian Army, the Rajput Regiment.
  • It rendered yeoman service in various operations, some of which are Operation Aman off Sri Lanka to assist IPKF, Operation Cactus to resolve hostage situation off the Maldives, Operation Pawan for patrolling duties off the coast of Sri Lanka, and Operation Crowsnest off Lakshadweep.

Context: Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports invites nominations for Sports Awards 2021.

About Sports Awards

  • The government gives Sports Awards every year to acknowledge achievements in the sports field by Indian sportspersons.
  • The awards are as follows:
    • Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award: for spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years.
    • Arjuna Award: for consistent outstanding performance for four years.
    • Dronacharya Award: for coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious international sports events.
    • Dhyan Chand Award: for life time contribution to sports development.
    • Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar: given to corporate entities and individuals who have played a visible role in the area of sports promotion and development.
    • Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy: given to a university for overall top performance in inter-university tournaments.
