SLINEX – 2023
Why in News?
The 10th edition of the maritime Exercise SLINEX – 2023 recently began in Colombo.
Exercise SLINEX – 2023
Exercise SLINEX – 2023 is a bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy.
Background
- SLINEX is an annual exercise, and SLINEX – 2023 marks the 10th edition of the exercise.
- The exercise aims to enhance interoperability, improve mutual understanding, and exchange best practices and procedures in multi-faceted maritime operations between both navies.
Phases and Participants
- The exercise will be conducted in two phases: Harbour Phase and Sea Phase.
- The Indian Navy will be represented by two vessels, INS Kiltan (Advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette) and INS Savitri (Offshore Patrol Vessel).
- The Sri Lanka Navy will have two vessels, SLNS Gajabahu (Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel) and SLNS Sagara (OPV).
Significance
- SLINEX is in line with India’s policy of ‘Neighbourhood First’ and the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)’.
Jal Jeevan Mission
Why in News?
Under the leadership of Prime Minister 60% of rural households have access to clean drinking water through taps. More than 1.55 lakh villages, (25% of total number of villages), in India have so far reported ‘Har Ghar Jal’, i.e., every household in these villages has access to clean drinking water through taps at their household premises.
About Jal Jeevan Mission
Nodal: Ministry of Jal Shakti
- Jal Jeevan Mission, a central government initiative under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to ensure access of piped water for every household in India.
- National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) was restructured and subsumed into Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – to provide Functional Household Tap Water (FHTC) to every rural household with service level at the rate of 55 lpcd i.e., Har Ghar Nal Se Jal (HGNSJ) by 2024.
Implications
- Supply of water to all households is a basic necessity
- Reduction in water borne diseases which was due to due to consumption of substandard water
Challenges
- Critical situation of Decrease in ground water table.
- Water demand and supply is a miss match
- Contamination of local ground level sources of water like, ponds lakes and wells.
- Sustaining the provision of water to all households is a challenge, not just starting it.
