CHANDRAYAAN-1
Chandrayaan-1, India's first mission to
Moon, was launched successfully on
October 22, 2008 from SDSC SHAR,
Sriharikota.
The spacecraft was orbiting around the
Moon at a height of 100 km from the
lunar surface for chemical, mineralogical
and photo-geologic mapping of the
Moon.
The spacecraft carried 11 scientific
instruments built in India, USA, UK,
Germany, Sweden and Bulgaria

CHANDRAYAN-2
• Why in news?
Chandrayaan-II was launched onboard
GSLV-MK-III-M1 on July 22. It orbited
earth and kept on increasing the height of
its orbit before ultimately moving into
Lunar Orbit.
It is a completely indigenous mission i.e.
all the components of the mission have
been developed by India. This also led to
significant delay in the launch of the
mission.

FAQs on PPT: Space Technology- 4 - Crash Course for UPSC Aspirants

1. What is space technology?
Ans. Space technology refers to the application of science and engineering for the exploration and utilization of outer space. It involves the development and use of various technologies, such as satellites, spacecraft, and launch vehicles, to study celestial objects, communicate, gather data, and perform other activities in space.
2. How is space technology used in everyday life?
Ans. Space technology has numerous applications in our everyday lives. It enables communication through satellite-based services like television broadcasting, internet connectivity, and global positioning systems (GPS). It also helps in weather forecasting, disaster management, navigation, remote sensing for environmental monitoring, and even in fields like agriculture and transportation.
3. What are the benefits of space technology?
Ans. Space technology offers several benefits to humanity. It enhances our understanding of the universe, allows us to explore other celestial bodies, and contributes to scientific advancements. It also provides critical services like communication, weather monitoring, and navigation, which are essential for modern society. Additionally, space technology promotes technological innovation, stimulates economic growth, and fosters international cooperation.
4. How is space technology used in the field of astronomy?
Ans. Space technology plays a crucial role in astronomy. Telescopes and observatories placed in space, such as the Hubble Space Telescope, provide a clear view of the universe without atmospheric interference. These space-based observatories capture high-resolution images, study distant galaxies, detect celestial phenomena, and contribute to our understanding of the cosmos. Space technology also enables the launch and operation of space probes and rovers for planetary exploration.
5. What are the challenges involved in space technology development?
Ans. Space technology development faces several challenges. These include the high costs associated with building and launching satellites or spacecraft, ensuring their reliability and safety, and overcoming technical complexities. Furthermore, space missions require long planning and extensive testing to ensure success. Space debris and orbital congestion pose additional challenges, as they can endanger space assets and limit future space activities. International collaboration and continuous research and development are essential to address these challenges.
