Igneous Rocks
• The word igneous is derived from the Latin word ‘ignis’
meaning fire. These rocks are of thermal origin and are
associated with volcanic eruptions.
• These rocks have been formed due to solidification of
hot and molten material called magma.
• It is believed that at the time of its birth the Earth was
in a molten state. The igneous rocks were the first to be
formed as a result of the solidification of the outer layer
of the Earth.
• Thus, igneous rocks are also known as the primary
rocks. They can be divided into two types— intrusive
igneous rocks and extrusive igneous rocks

FAQs on PPT: Types of Rocks & Sea Floor Spreading Theory - Geography for UPSC CSE

1. What are the three types of rocks?
Ans. The three types of rocks are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks are formed from the solidification of molten material, sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and compression of sediments, and metamorphic rocks are formed from the transformation of pre-existing rocks through heat and pressure.
2. How does sea floor spreading contribute to the theory of plate tectonics?
Ans. Sea floor spreading is a key component of the theory of plate tectonics. It explains how new oceanic crust is formed at mid-ocean ridges and then spreads outwards, pushing the older crust aside. This process provides evidence for the movement of tectonic plates and helps explain the formation of ocean basins and the distribution of earthquakes and volcanic activity.
3. What evidence supports the theory of sea floor spreading?
Ans. Several lines of evidence support the theory of sea floor spreading. One significant piece of evidence is the pattern of magnetic stripes on the ocean floor, which are symmetrical on either side of mid-ocean ridges. This pattern suggests that the Earth's magnetic field has reversed itself multiple times throughout history, and new crust is continuously being formed and pushing older crust away from the ridges.
4. How do igneous rocks form?
Ans. Igneous rocks form when molten material, such as magma or lava, cools and solidifies. This can happen either underground or on the Earth's surface. When magma cools slowly beneath the surface, large crystals have time to form, resulting in intrusive igneous rocks. On the other hand, when lava erupts onto the surface and cools quickly, small crystals or glassy textures are formed, resulting in extrusive igneous rocks.
5. Can sedimentary rocks provide clues about Earth's past environments?
Ans. Yes, sedimentary rocks can provide valuable clues about Earth's past environments. The layers of sedimentary rocks contain fossilized remains of plants, animals, and microorganisms that lived in the past. By studying these fossils and the characteristics of the sedimentary layers, scientists can reconstruct past environments, such as ancient oceans, rivers, and climates.
