Respiration in Plants Class 11 Notes Biology Chapter 14

Significance of respiration:
Respiration plays a significant role in the life of plants. The important ones are given below:
(i) It releases energy, which is consumed in various metabolic processes necessary for life of plant.
(ii) Energy produced can be regulated according to requirement of all activities.
(iii) It converts in soluble foods into soluble form.
(iv) Intermediate products of cell respiration can be used in different metabolic pathways

FAQs on Respiration in Plants Class 11 Notes Biology Chapter 14

1. What is respiration in plants?
Ans. Respiration in plants is a metabolic process by which plants convert glucose and oxygen into carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of ATP. It occurs in the cells of plants, both during the day and night.
2. How does respiration occur in plants?
Ans. Respiration in plants occurs through a series of chemical reactions. During respiration, glucose is broken down in the presence of oxygen, releasing carbon dioxide, water, and energy. This process takes place in the mitochondria of plant cells.
3. What is the importance of respiration in plants?
Ans. Respiration is vital for plants as it provides them with the energy needed for various metabolic activities, such as growth, reproduction, and nutrient absorption. It also helps in the breakdown of stored carbohydrates to release energy when photosynthesis is not possible.
4. Can plants respire without oxygen?
Ans. No, plants cannot respire without oxygen. Oxygen is an essential component for the respiration process in plants. It acts as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain, allowing for the production of ATP.
5. How does respiration in plants differ from respiration in animals?
Ans. Respiration in plants and animals follows the same basic principle of breaking down glucose to release energy. However, there are some differences. Plants primarily respire aerobically, meaning they require oxygen for the process, while some animals can also respire anaerobically. Additionally, plants also undergo photosynthesis, which is not the case in animals.
