Introduction

Supply Chain Reforms for Agriculture, Rational Tax Systems, Simple & Clear Laws, Capable Human Resource and Strong Financial System.

  • The five pillars of a self-reliant India are the Economy, which should see significant growth, Infrastructure, which should be a defining feature of the country, a modern System based on technology, a Vibrant Demography that provides the energy for a self-reliant India, and Demand, which should be fully utilized.
  • The goal of the Self-Reliant India Mission is to reduce dependence on imports by promoting local products, improving safety and quality, and gaining global market share. Therefore, the mission emphasizes the significance of boosting the local economy.

Significance of self-reliance and self-efficiency in the times of crisis

  • India has learned from Covid-19 that self-reliance and self-sufficiency are crucial goals for the country at all levels, from villages to districts to states. The meaning of self-reliance has evolved in the globalized world, and it is not the same as being self-centered.
  • Achieving self-reliance will enable India to compete better in the global supply chain, leading to increased efficiency and quality in various sectors. The pandemic highlighted the importance of local manufacturing, markets, and supply chains. Restrictions on travel and mobility have disrupted the flow of goods, services, and labor across international, state, and district borders.
  • India's demographic dividend has resulted in an increased working-age population that needs to be employed domestically, capitalizing on India's potential. As India's population surpasses China's, domestic demand can be met with locally produced goods.
  • Self-reliance does not mean exclusionary or isolationist strategies but rather the creation of a helping hand for the world. It is not a rejection of globalization but a call for a new form of people-centric globalization that considers the needs of laborers, vulnerable populations, and the less fortunate.

Means to achieve the self-reliance and self-sufficiency

  • In order to achieve self-reliance and self-sufficiency, India requires several bold reforms to prevent future crises like Covid-19. These reforms include supply chain reforms for agriculture, a rational tax system, clear and simple laws, a capable human resource, and a strong financial system. These reforms will encourage businesses, attract investments, and further strengthen the Make in India initiative.
  • Local governments should play a crucial role in supporting the government's outreach to spread awareness in rural India. Local governments can conduct door-to-door campaigns and provide support to the local administrative and security machinery.

Conclusion

The current economic slowdown and weakened globalization call for a new path for India. The Atmanirbhar mission is a bridge to transform India into a new era that balances the interests of capital and labor for optimal effectiveness and efficiency.
