MCQ: Effective Resistance, Physics - NEET PDF Download

Question: A wire has resistance 12 ohm. It is bent in the form of a circle . The effective resistance between the two points on any diameter of the circle is:

(a) 12

(b) 24

(c) 3

(d) 6

Solution:

If the total resistance of the wire is R, then after bending the total resistance will still be R.

Now, along any diameter, we can say that the whole circle is divided into two segments.

So, the resistance of each segment is half, i.e. R/2

FAQs on MCQ: Effective Resistance, Physics - NEET

1. What is effective resistance in physics?
Ans. Effective resistance, also known as equivalent resistance, is a single resistance that can replace a complex network of resistors and produce the same effect on the flow of current. It is calculated using various methods such as series and parallel combinations of resistors.
2. How is the effective resistance calculated in a series circuit?
Ans. In a series circuit, the effective resistance (R) is the sum of individual resistances. It can be calculated by simply adding up the values of all the resistors connected in series. Mathematically, R = R1 + R2 + R3 + ..., where R1, R2, R3, etc. are the resistances of each resistor.
3. What is the formula to calculate the effective resistance in a parallel circuit?
Ans. In a parallel circuit, the formula to calculate the effective resistance (R) is given by the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of individual resistances. Mathematically, 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 + ..., where R1, R2, R3, etc. are the resistances of each resistor.
4. How does the effective resistance affect the flow of current in a circuit?
Ans. The effective resistance determines the total opposition to the flow of current in a circuit. A higher effective resistance results in a lower flow of current, while a lower effective resistance allows more current to flow. It follows Ohm's Law, which states that the current flowing through a circuit is directly proportional to the voltage and inversely proportional to the resistance.
5. Can the effective resistance of a circuit be negative?
Ans. No, the effective resistance of a circuit cannot be negative. Resistance is a physical property that represents the opposition to the flow of current. It is always positive or zero, but never negative. Negative resistance is a concept used in certain electronic components, but it does not apply to the effective resistance of a circuit.
