Qualified GATE score can be used for seeking admission and/or financial assistance to: 

(i) Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts.

(ii) Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Arts and Science, in the institutions supported by the MoE and other Government agencies. 

(iii) GATE score is also used by some colleges and institutions for giving admission to students without MoE scholarship/assistantship. 

(iv) Further, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have been using the GATE score in their recruitment process. 

  • GATE 2023 will be jointly conducted by IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. The cities are distributed among these eight zones.

Organizing Institute for GATE 2023 is Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

Important Dates (Official)

The deadline for Regular Registration is extended till 7th Oct. 2022.
  • Rectification portal issue has been resolved. Candidates can now rectify the defects in their application from 22nd September 2022. Please note that you will have two more weeks to rectify the errors, after the application window closes, i.e until 20th Oct. 
  • Also note that you need not submit new application for the defects in your application.

Basic Information of GATE 2023


  • GATE 2023 is a national-level test conducted for admission to postgraduate engineering (ME/ M.Tech) or research courses at top colleges in India such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, etc. 
  • GATE 2023 will be conducted as an online computer-based entrance test. 
  • There will be 65 questions (MCQs, MSQs and NATs) asked with a total weightage of 100 marks. Students who qualify GATE Cutoff will be eligible for admission to top M.Tech colleges in India as well as PSU recruitment.

GATE 2023 Highlights

  • Last year, GATE 2022 was conducted across 206 cities, but 10 of the earlier cities have been dropped this year (2023) due to operational issues, while many new ones have been added.
  • Puttur city in IISc Bangalore zone is removed.
  • Ludhiana city is newly added in Roorkee Zone.
  • A candidate is allowed to appear for ONE or maximum TWO subject papers only. TWO Paper combinations have to be chosen from the given list of combinations of papers. Final allotment of TWO papers will still be subject to availability of infrastructure and dates. 
  • Even if a candidate is appearing for TWO papers, the candidate should fill ONLY ONE application form.
  • Eligibility Criteria: A candidate who is currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program OR has already completed any government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts is eligible to appear for GATE 2023 examination.
  • There is NO age limit to appear for GATE 2023 examination.
  • GATE 2023 score card will remain valid for THREE years from the date of announcement of results.
  • Candidates with BDS, BVSc and BSc (Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry) degrees can write GATE 2023.

Combination of TWO Papers Allowed to Appear in GATE 2023

  • Two Paper combinations for GATE 2023 will be conducted for 29 papers by IIT Kanpur. The table shows the list of papers with codes. 
  • A candidate can appear either in one or up to two papers of the GATE 2023 examination. 
  • However, a candidate can only select the second paper from the pre-defined 'Two Paper Combination' list. Therefore, two paper combinations for GATE 2023 will be selected with a predefined list shared below.

  • Candidates opting for two paper combinations for GATE 2023 must have a primary choice of paper as their default choice. 
  • The second choice of paper has to be chosen from the allowed combinations given in the table above. Combinations other than the listed ones are not allowed. Under unforeseen circumstances, certain combinations may be removed from the list in the above table later. 
  • In such cases, the fee paid for the second paper will be refunded to the candidates. Also, note that the examination centre for the second paper may be different (but in the same city) from that for the first paper due to the infrastructure and scheduling constraints.

  • Various known PSUs (Public Sector Undertaking) recruit eligible and qualified candidates for different posts.
  • Candidates are offered high compensation packages and other benefits (medical benefits and other aids).
  • In the past, several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have used GATE score to shortlist the candidates for employment. A few such organizations are:

  • Candidates have to apply separately for the posts offered by various institutes.
  • The application forms for different PSUs are released on different dates and candidates have to submit the application form within the stipulated time to be recruited by the PSU.
  • Direct recruitment to Group A level posts in Central government, i.e., Senior Field Officer (Tele), Senior Research Officer (Crypto) and Senior Research Officer (S&T) in Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India, is now being carried out on the basis of GATE score. 

(ii) Enrollment in Masters and PhD Programs

  • A decent GATE Score can fulfil any aspiring engineer’s dream of studying from an IIT or NIT.
  • GATE enables candidates to seek admissions in M.Tech. /M.E. / M.S. in their respective discipline in IITs or NITs or institutes in Germany and Singapore depending on the GATE Cutoff released by them.
  • Institutes such as IIT Bombay offer admissions to PhD, PGDM, and PGDIE programs right after graduation on the basis of GATE Score.
  • Some IIMs reserve seats for admissions to doctoral programs through GATE.
  • Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Arts and Science, in the institutions supported by the MoE and other Government agencies. Even in some colleges and institutions, which admit students without MoE scholarship/assistantship, the GATE qualification is mandatory.

(iii) Fellowships

  • Qualification in GATE is also a minimum requirement to apply for various fellowships awarded by many Government organizations.

GATE 2023 Eligibility Criteria

The candidates who possess the following criteria are eligible to appear in GATE. 

(i) Educational Qualification

Before starting the application process, the candidate must ensure that they meet the educational eligibility criteria of GATE 2023.

  • A candidate who is currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program OR has already completed any government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts is eligible for appearing in the GATE 2023 exam.

Important Information: Some of the Professional Societies/Institutions, which conduct examination in various fields of engineering, are as follows:

  • The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE)
  • The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
  • The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
  • The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI)
  • The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChemE)
  • The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
  • The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIIE)

However, the candidates who possess certification from any of the professional societies must ensure that those examinations conducted by the societies are approved by MoE / AICTE / UGC / UPSC as equivalent to B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Arch. / B.Planning., etc

(ii) Pass Percentage

To apply for GATE 2023, there are no minimum pass percentage criteria defined.

(iii) Age Limit

There is no age limit defined to apply for the GATE exam.

(iv) Nationality

  • You should have Indian nationality to apply for GATE 2023. 
  • Candidates belonging to Dhaka, Kathmandu, Kuala Lumpur, Male, Port Louis, Thimphu, Dubai and Singapore are also eligible for the GATE 2023 exam.

GATE Eligibility Criteria for International Students

Candidates who have obtained / are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries other than India must be currently in the 3rd or higher years or completed their Bachelor’s degree (duration: at least 3 years) in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Arts / Commerce.

Eligibility Document

  1. If a candidate has already passed (in 2022 or earlier) one of the qualifying examinations mentioned above, he/she has to submit (i.e. upload) the degree certificate / provisional certificate/course completion certificate issued by the institute.
  2. If the candidate is in the final year of any of the qualifying examinations mentioned above, he/she has to upload a Certificate from the Head of the Department / Institute.

How to fill GATE Online Application Form?

The steps to be followed to fill the GATE 2023 Online Application form are explained below:

(a) Registration

  • Visit the official website of GOAPS 2023. 
  • Enter few personal details, a valid e-mail ID, and a mobile number. 
  • Create a password that will be used to login later.

(b) Filling GATE 2023 Application Form

  • Enter your personal and educational details in the application form for GATE. 
  • Preview the form to verify the information entered and modify the incorrect immediately to avoid discrepancies later. 
  • Note that the applications cannot be modified post final submission.

(c) Fee Payment

  • After saving the application form candidate can make the payment by net banking, debit card, and credit card. 
  • After paying GATE application fees, a fee payment number is generated which the candidate can note for the later stages of the GATE Selection process.

GATE Application Form Correction

From the year 2022, the exam conducting authority has introduced a change that once the application form is submitted, it cannot be changed/rectified.

  • Therefore, candidates must ensure that all the details and supporting documents are correct and uploaded.
  • If everything is found correct then GATE Application Form will be accepted else the defects will be notified to the candidate.
  • This correction needs to be carried out within a stipulated time.
  • Candidates should be quick in fixing the errors in the form before the deadline.
  • Those who fail to fix, their application form will be rejected and no communication will be made in this regard.

Candidates can check their form status i.e. whether the authority has received the form or not. It also tells if the application form submitted by the candidate needs any correction or not. GATE Exam Pattern 2023

  • The GATE Exam comprises  Multiple-choice questions (MCQs), Multiple-select questions (MSQs) & Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • There is a negative marking for the multiple-choice questions while no marks will be deducted for the Multiple-select questions & Numerical answer type questions.

Distribution of Marks in papers AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, XH, and XL is different: General Aptitude is of 15 Marks and Subject Questions of 85 Marks making a total of 100 marks.


Note: 1/3 marks will be deducted for the wrong answers i.e (0.33) marks for 1 mark questions and (0.66) marks will be deducted for questions carrying 2 marks. No mark will be deducted for the wrong answer to MSQs & NAT questions.
