Indian Railways conducted a successful trial run on the world’s highest railway bridge — the Chenab Rail Bridge — on Thursday. had its first successful trial run on Thursday. The rail services will commence soon. on this line, constructed between Ramban and Reasi districts.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February, the Chenab Bridge project was approved in 2003 and contracted in 2008, despite concerns over its safety and stability. The single-arch bridge over the Chenab River in J&K, taller than the Eiffel Tower, passed all mandatory tests and is set to make its mark on railroad history.
Standing 1,178 feet above the Chenab River, the bridge is 35 metres taller than Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower. The bridge runs between Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, and forms a crucial link from Katra to Banihal.
A part of the Rs 35,000 crore Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project, the Chenab Bridge, costing around Rs 14,000 crore, aims to enhance connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir’s challenging terrain.
According to Indian Railways, the Chenab Bridge is part of the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative, connecting Kashmir to the rest of India. The Vande Bharat Metro train will operate between Jammu and Srinagar once the USBRL project is fully operational.
