Directions: Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Attention stargazers! The super blue moon is here and will be visible worldwide for the next two days. A full moon that is both a blue moon and a supermoon is called a super blue moon. This phenomenon occurs just a few times a year. During this time, the moon will appear bigger and brighter. This is the only super blue moon of this year.

Contrary to its name, a super blue moon will not be blue in colour. In some instances, it could actually appear in an orange/red colour due to the scattering of light caused by dust particles from wildfires in the Earth’s atmosphere.

This will be the first of the four remaining supermoons of 2024, which will be followed by three more supermoons on September 17, October 17, and November 15.

A super blue moon will be visible until this Wednesday from across the world. It is also the third of four full moons in a season. A super blue moon is up to 30 per cent brighter and up to 14 per cent larger than a usual full moon. If a full moon appears twice a month, it is also called a blue moon.

When the moon is closest to the Earth, it is known as perigee, making it appear slightly bigger than usual. When the moon is farthest from the Earth, it is known as apogee, making it look slightly smaller. At perigee, the moon is around 363,300 kilometres away from the Earth, and at apogee, it is around 405,500 km away.

Q1. What is a supermoon?

(a) A full moon that occurs when the moon is farthest from Earth
(b) A full moon that occurs when the moon is closest to Earth
(c) A full moon that occurs during a lunar eclipse
(d) A full moon that appears blue due to atmospheric conditions

Answer: (b) A full moon that occurs when the moon is closest to Earth

Solution: A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit. Because of its proximity, the moon appears about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual.

Q2. What is a blue moon?

(a) The moon appearing blue due to atmospheric conditions
(b) The second full moon in a single calendar month
(c) A full moon that appears larger due to the "moon illusion"
(d) A lunar event that happens every month

Current Affairs: Passage of the Day - 20 August 2024 | Current Affairs & General Knowledge - CLAT  View Answer
Answer: (b) The second full moon in a single calendar month

Solution: A blue moon refers to the occurrence of two full moons within a single calendar month, which happens every 2-3 years. Another definition also includes the third full moon in a season with four full moons.

Q3. How often do Super Blue Moons occur?

(a) Every year
(b) Every 10 to 20 years
(c) Every 2-3 months
(d) Every 50 years

Current Affairs: Passage of the Day - 20 August 2024 | Current Affairs & General Knowledge - CLAT  View Answer
Answer: (b) Every 10 to 20 years

Solution: Super Blue Moons are rare events that occur approximately every 10 to 20 years. While 25% of all full moons are super moons, only about 3% of these are also blue moons.

Q4. Why might the moon appear blue during a blue moon event?

(a) Because the moon is closer to Earth
(b) Due to certain atmospheric conditions like smoke or dust
(c) Because it's the second full moon in a month
(d) Because of the reflection of Earth's oceans

Current Affairs: Passage of the Day - 20 August 2024 | Current Affairs & General Knowledge - CLAT  View Answer
Answer: (b) Due to certain atmospheric conditions like smoke or dust

Solution: The moon might appear bluish if certain atmospheric conditions, such as smoke or dust, are present. Normally, the moon will look more yellow or orange when it’s near the horizon.

Q5. Why does the moon sometimes appear larger near the horizon?

(a) Because it is closer to the Earth
(b) Due to the "moon illusion"
(c) Because the moon is always bigger when it's near the horizon
(d) Due to changes in the Earth's orbit

Current Affairs: Passage of the Day - 20 August 2024 | Current Affairs & General Knowledge - CLAT  View Answer
Answer: (b) Due to the "maoon illusion"

Solution: The "moon illusion" is a phenomenon where the moon appears larger when it’s near the horizon compared to when it’s higher in the sky. This illusion is due to the way our brains perceive the moon's size relative to objects on the horizon.
