Homospory in Detail:
Homospory is characteristic of lower plants like mosses, liverworts, and ferns. These plants produce spores through the process of meiosis. Meiosis is a type of cell division that results in the formation of haploid spores. These spores are then released into the environment, where they can germinate and develop into new individuals.
In homosporous plants, both the male and female reproductive structures, known as antheridia and archegonia, respectively, are present on the same plant. The antheridia produce sperm cells, while the archegonia produce egg cells. The sperm cells need to swim through water to reach the egg cells for fertilization to occur.
Heterospory in Detail:
Heterospory is found in higher plants, particularly seed plants or spermatophytes. Seed plants include gymnosperms, such as conifers, and angiosperms, which are flowering plants. Unlike homosporous plants, heterosporous plants produce two distinct types of spores: microspores and megaspores.
