The Non-Cooperation Movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi in support ...
The Non-Cooperation Movement was a significant event in the Indian Independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. It was launched in 1920 to protest against the British government's repressive policies in India.

The movement was started to support both Khilafat and Swaraj movements. Khilafat Movement was a movement started by Indian Muslims in support of the Caliph of the Ottoman Empire. The Indian Muslims were concerned about the future of the Caliphate after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I. Gandhi saw the Khilafat movement as an opportunity to bring together the Hindus and Muslims of India for a common cause.

On the other hand, the Swaraj movement was a movement for self-rule or independence. Gandhi believed that India could achieve Swaraj if the people of India united and stopped cooperating with the British government.

Therefore, the Non-Cooperation Movement was launched to support both these movements. Gandhi called upon the people of India to boycott British goods, resign from government offices, and refuse to pay taxes. The movement gained widespread support, and the British government was forced to take notice.

However, the movement was called off in 1922 after a violent incident in Chauri Chaura, Uttar Pradesh. A group of protestors set fire to a police station, killing 22 policemen. Gandhi felt that the movement had lost its non-violent character and called off the movement.

In conclusion, the Non-Cooperation Movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi in support of both Khilafat and Swaraj movements. The movement was an important step towards India's independence and showed the power of non-violent resistance.
