Potential osmotic pressure is the maximum osmotic pressure that could develop in a solution if it were separated from its pure solvent by a semipermeable membrane. Osmosis occurs when two solutions, containing different concentration of solute, are separated by a selectively permeable membrane.

What is Osmotic Pressure?
Osmotic pressure is the pressure that must be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of water across a semipermeable membrane. It is the pressure required to stop osmosis from occurring.

Function in Osmosis
Osmosis is the process by which solvent molecules move through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated one. Osmotic pressure plays a crucial role in this process by driving the movement of water molecules to achieve equilibrium on both sides of the membrane.

Function in Semipermeable Membrane
- Regulation of Water Flow: Osmotic pressure helps regulate the flow of water across the semipermeable membrane by balancing the concentration of solutes on both sides.
- Prevention of Excessive Swelling or Shrinking: The presence of osmotic pressure prevents cells from absorbing too much water (resulting in swelling) or losing too much water (resulting in shrinking), maintaining cell integrity.
- Selective Permeability: The semipermeable membrane allows only certain molecules or ions to pass through based on their size and charge. Osmotic pressure ensures that water moves in response to the concentration gradient of solutes.
In summary, osmotic pressure is essential in osmosis and the function of semipermeable membranes as it maintains the balance of solute concentrations and regulates water flow to support cellular functions.
