How do we connect voltmeter and ammeter in a circuit ? What is likely to happen if the positions of these instruments are changed?
Most Upvoted Answer
How do we connect voltmeter and ammeter in a circuit ? What is likely ...
Voltmeter is always connected in parallel with the the circuit.

Ammeter is always connected in series with the circuit.

If the positions of these two are interchanged, the ammeter will be destroyed by high amount of current given that it is of low resistance.

Connecting Voltmeter and Ammeter in a Circuit

To connect a voltmeter and an ammeter in a circuit, follow the steps below:

  1. First, turn off the power source to the circuit to avoid any accidents.

  2. Connect the ammeter in series with the component in the circuit that you want to measure the current passing through.

  3. Connect the voltmeter in parallel with the component in the circuit that you want to measure the voltage across.

  4. Turn on the power source to the circuit.

  5. Read the values on the ammeter and voltmeter to obtain the current and voltage measurements, respectively.

  6. After taking the measurements, turn off the power source to the circuit.

Changing the Positions of the Instruments

If the positions of the voltmeter and ammeter are changed in a circuit, it is likely to affect the accuracy of the measurements obtained. This is because:

  • A voltmeter is designed to measure the voltage across a component in a circuit, and it is connected in parallel with the component. If the voltmeter is connected in series, it will cause a short circuit and may damage both the voltmeter and the component being measured.

  • An ammeter is designed to measure the current passing through a component in a circuit, and it is connected in series with the component. If the ammeter is connected in parallel, it will cause a break in the circuit and may prevent the current from flowing through the component being measured.

Therefore, it is important to connect the voltmeter and ammeter in the correct positions in a circuit to obtain accurate measurements and avoid any damage to the instruments or the components being measured.
