Explanation:

Spring tides occur on new moon and full moon days. This is because the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon on the earth is in the same direction on these days. The combined gravitational force causes the high tides to be higher than usual and the low tides to be lower than usual.

On these days the sun, the moon and the earth are in a straight line. This is because during full moon and new moon days, the moon is either directly between the sun and the earth or the earth is directly between the sun and the moon. This alignment causes the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon to add up, resulting in higher tides.

Hence, both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion. Therefore, the correct answer is option 'A'.

The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both contribute to the tides. Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon. During the moon's quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles, causing the bulges to cancel each other..

When the Sun, Moon and Earth come into a straight line an ECLIPSE occurs. This does not happen very often because the Moon's orbit is inclined to that of the Earth. A TOTAL eclipse occurs when all the Moon or Sun is blotted out. A PARTIAL eclipse is when only part of the Sun or Moon is covered.
