Humans are diploid organisms by having two members or homologous chromosomes in a pair. Total 23 pairs of chromosomes exist in each somatic cell of the body. Total 46 chromosomes occur. One particular pair individually in male and female determines their respective sex. This one pair is XX in females and XY in males. All the 46 chromosomes in pairs can be seen under microscope at metaphase stage in the cells which are undergoing mitosis.

False Statements about Chromosomes

Statement 1: Human beings have 23 pairs of chromosomes.

This statement is true. Human beings have 23 pairs of chromosomes, i.e. 46 chromosomes in total. Each pair of chromosomes consists of one chromosome from each parent.

Statement 2: Sex chromosome in human male is named XX.

This statement is false. The sex chromosomes in human males are named XY, not XX. Females have two X chromosomes. The sex chromosomes determine the gender of an individual.

Statement 3: Chromosomes are best seen in metaphase.

This statement is partly true. Chromosomes are visible during all stages of the cell cycle, but they are most clearly visible during metaphase. During metaphase, the replicated chromosomes align along the equator of the cell and are visible as distinct structures.

Therefore, the correct answer is option B, i.e. statement 2 only is false.
