Solution:

Given:

Power to be supplied = 300 kW

Frequency of power source = 50 Hz

Frequency required = 60 Hz

To generate 60 Hz power from 50 Hz source, we need to use a motor-generator set consisting of a synchronous motor driving a synchronous generator.

Let the synchronous motor has 'p1' poles and synchronous generator has 'p2' poles.

Formula to find the frequency of the generated voltage:

f = (p × n) / 120

Where,

f = frequency of generated voltage

p = number of poles

n = speed of the machine in rpm

Frequency of the motor:

f1 = (p1 × n) / 120

Frequency of the generator:

f2 = (p2 × n) / 120

As per the question,

f1 = 50 Hz and f2 = 60 Hz

Substituting the values, we get

(p1 × n) / 120 = 50

(p2 × n) / 120 = 60

Dividing the above two equations, we get

p1 / p2 = 6 / 5

As 'p1' and 'p2' are integers, the only possible values of 'p1' and 'p2' are

p1 = 10 and p2 = 12

Therefore, the motor has 10 poles and the generator has 12 poles.

Hence, option 'D' is the correct answer.
