(b) The word ampulla is derived from the Latin word 'flask'. Being the second portion of the fallopian tube, it is the intermediate dilated portion which immediately curves over the ovary. This is the common site of human fertilization as both the ovum and sperms are simultaneously transported here

Fertilization in humans is practically feasible only if the ovum and sperms are transported simultaneously to the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube. Let's understand this in detail:

Process of Fertilization:
Fertilization is the fusion of gametes (sperm and ovum) to form a zygote. In humans, fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes. The process involves the following steps:

1. Ovulation:
During ovulation, the mature ovum is released from the ovary and enters the fallopian tube.

2. Transport of Sperms:
The sperms are transported from the vagina to the fallopian tube through the cervix and uterus. This process is aided by the cervical mucus, which helps in the movement of sperms towards the ovum.

3. Fusion of Gametes:
When the ovum and sperm meet in the fallopian tube, they fuse to form a zygote. The zygote then undergoes multiple cell divisions and develops into an embryo, which eventually implants in the uterus.

Why is simultaneous transport of ovum and sperm necessary for fertilization?
Fertilization in humans is practically feasible only if the ovum and sperms are transported simultaneously to the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube. This is because:

1. Time Limitation:
The ovum is viable for only 12-24 hours after ovulation. Therefore, if the sperms are not present in the fallopian tube when the ovum arrives, fertilization cannot occur.

2. Distance:
The distance between the cervix and the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube is relatively long. Therefore, the sperms need to travel a considerable distance to reach the site of fertilization. If the ovum reaches the site before the sperms, fertilization cannot occur.

3. Capacitation:
Sperms need to undergo a process called capacitation before they can fertilize the ovum. Capacitation involves the removal of glycoprotein coat and alteration of the membrane of the sperm. This process occurs in the female reproductive tract and takes some time. Therefore, the sperms need to reach the site of fertilization before capacitation is complete.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, simultaneous transport of ovum and sperm to the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube is essential for fertilization to occur in humans. If the ovum and sperm do not meet at the right time and place, fertilization cannot occur.
