The Americans with disabilities act (ADA) was designed to ensure that there is no discrimination against and unfair termination of differently-abled workers in the workplace. However, after the act was introduced, there has been a marked increase in unemployment among the differently-abled.

Which of the following best explains this seeming discrepancy?

  • a)
A number of differently-abled people chose not to work

  • b)
Not willing to deal with the issues of workplace discrimination of the differently-abled, several companies recruited fewer of them in the first place

  • c)
Knowing that the act was about to be enforced, companies terminated some of the differently-abled while they had a chance

  • d)
There was no act introduced that would guarantee a job for the differently-abled

  • e)
The unemployment among the able-bodied has remained consistently high

The Americans with disabilities act (ADA) was designed to ensure that ...
Step 1: Analyzing the Argument

An Act that was designed to help the differently-abled seems to have had a detrimental effect on their employment levels.

This seeming contradiction in the argument has to be removed by adding information that will explain the lower employment levels after the introduction of the Act. The correct option should also accept that the law was designed to help the differently-abled and not question its motives.

Step 2: Eliminating Options

Option (A) can be eliminated because it does not explain why the differently-abled chose not to work at a time when the government is making things easier for them to work.

Option (C) can be eliminated because the option seems to imply that the Act tried to prevent the termination of the employment of the differently-abled, when the argument does not say so. Also, the option seems to imply that the differently-abled were treated unfairly – implying that the Act is a failure.

Option (D) does not explain why unemployment has increased. There has never been an Act guaranteeing jobs. So why has the unemployment among the differently-abled increased now?

Option (E) is irrelevant to the discussion. The Act and the discussion on unemployment is pertinent only to the differently-abled and the situation faced by the able-bodied has no impact on this scenario.

Option (B) resolves the paradox by explaining why the unemployment among the differently-abled has increased. Because companies want to avoid future complications (that may be caused by the Act), they have reduced employment.

Option B is the correct answer.

The Americans with disabilities act (ADA) was designed to ensure that ...
Explanation:

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was introduced to prevent discrimination against differently-abled workers in the workplace. However, the question states that there has been an increase in unemployment among differently-abled individuals after the act was introduced. The question asks for the reason behind this increase in unemployment and provides five options as answer choices.

Option A: A number of differently-abled people chose not to work.

This option suggests that differently-abled individuals themselves chose not to work, which is not a reason for the increase in unemployment. Moreover, the ADA was introduced to ensure that differently-abled individuals have equal employment opportunities and are not discriminated against, so it is unlikely that they would choose not to work because of the act.

Option B: Not willing to deal with the issues of workplace discrimination of the differently-abled, several companies recruited fewer of them in the first place.

This option provides a plausible reason for the increase in unemployment among differently-abled individuals. If companies are hesitant to recruit differently-abled workers due to the fear of dealing with workplace discrimination issues, they are less likely to hire them in the first place. This could result in fewer employment opportunities for differently-abled individuals and contribute to their increased unemployment rates.

Option C: Knowing that the act was about to be enforced, companies terminated some of the differently-abled while they had a chance.

This option suggests that companies terminated differently-abled employees before the ADA was enforced. However, the ADA was enacted to prevent such discriminatory practices and protect the rights of differently-abled individuals in the workplace. Therefore, it is unlikely that companies would terminate differently-abled employees knowing that the act was about to be enforced.

Option D: There was no act introduced that would guarantee a job for the differently-abled.

This option suggests that the reason for the increase in unemployment among differently-abled individuals is due to the lack of an act that guarantees them a job. However, the ADA was introduced to ensure that differently-abled individuals have equal employment opportunities and are not discriminated against in the workplace. Therefore, this option is not a valid reason for the increase in unemployment among differently-abled individuals after the ADA was introduced.

Option E: The unemployment among the able-bodied has remained consistently high.

This option suggests that the reason for the increase in unemployment among differently-abled individuals is due to the overall high unemployment rates among the able-bodied population. However, this option does not provide a reason specific to differently-abled individuals and is therefore not a valid reason for the increase in their unemployment rates after the ADA was introduced.

Conclusion:

Option B provides a plausible reason for the increase in unemployment among differently-abled individuals after the ADA was introduced. Companies may be hesitant to recruit differently-abled workers due to the fear of dealing with workplace discrimination issues, resulting in fewer employment opportunities for differently-abled individuals.

Often it was believed that super intelligence leads to financial success, but a study by Malcolm Gadwall identified determination as the most important predictor of success. It certainly helps to be smart, but there are plenty of people as smart as Bill Gates who have achieved next to nothing. The study further concluded that there are aspects called components of determination that are more relevant than others, and more importantly, some of these components can be cultivated while others are innate. One of these components sheer willfulness, the desire to get something when you want it, no matter what is most important. Unfortunately, the study concluded that a good deal of willfulness must be inborn because it is common to see families in which one sibling has much more of it than the other sibling. Circumstances can alter it, but at the high end of the scale, nature seems to be more important than nurture. But a strong willed person needs to be disciplined and not self-indulgent, making discipline the second component of determination. Hence, determination implies your willfulness is balanced by discipline. This is because the stronger your will, the less anyone will be able to argue with you except yourself, and someone should argue with you because everyone has base impulses, but if you have more will than discipline youll just give into these impulses and as a result end up on a local maximum such as drug addiction. Another important thing that the study concludes is that discipline can be cultivated, and in fact does tend to vary quite a lot in the course of an individuals life, and since determination is the product of will and discipline, you can become more determined by being more disciplined. The last component that the study discovered another malleable one is ambition. If willfulness and discipline are what get you to your destination, ambition is how you choose it and the fact that ambition is malleable means there is a lot you can do to increase it. Hence to summarize, determination consists of willfulness balanced with discipline and aimed by ambition - fortunately at least two of these three qualities can be cultivated. The author is primarily concerned with:Acomparing and contrasting the roles played by intelligence and determination as a predictor of financial success.
