Hardness of water is due to presence of chlorides, sulphates and nitrates of calcium and magnesium. Hard water cannot be used for washing purposes as soap do not form lather with hard water easily which results in to wastage of soap in laundaries. Moreover use of hard water in industries results in to scale formation in inner layers of boilers on which insoluble calcium and magnesium carbonates gets deposited and being a bad conductor of heat result in to wastage of energy. Moreover hard water is not fit for drinking purpose as it hinders ionic imbalance in body. Repeated irrigation of crops by hard water increases calcium and magnesium ions in soil which increases soil alkalinity.

Consider the following statements: Hard water is not suitable for1. Dr...
Explanation:

Hard water is water that contains a high concentration of minerals, typically calcium and magnesium ions. These minerals can have various negative effects on different applications of water usage. Let's analyze the given statements to determine which are correct.

Statement 1: Hard water is not suitable for drinking.
This statement is correct. Hard water often has an unpleasant taste and can leave a residue or film on utensils and glassware. Additionally, the minerals in hard water can interfere with the taste and aroma of tea, coffee, and other beverages. It is generally recommended to use soft or treated water for drinking purposes.

Statement 2: Hard water is not suitable for washing clothes with soap.
This statement is correct. The minerals in hard water can react with soap to form insoluble compounds known as soap scum. Soap scum can prevent effective cleaning and result in dull and dingy clothes. It can also cause the fabric to feel stiff and rough. Therefore, using hard water for washing clothes with soap is not recommended.

Statement 3: Hard water is not suitable for use in boilers.
This statement is correct. When hard water is heated in a boiler or any other heating system, the minerals in the water can form scale deposits on the heat transfer surfaces. These scale deposits reduce the efficiency of the boiler, increase energy consumption, and can lead to costly repairs. Therefore, it is essential to use soft water in boilers to prevent scale buildup.

Statement 4: Hard water is not suitable for irrigating crops.
This statement is incorrect. While hard water can have negative effects on household applications, it does not necessarily harm crops. In fact, the minerals present in hard water can sometimes be beneficial for plant growth and can act as essential nutrients. However, if the water has an extremely high mineral content, it may lead to salt accumulation in the soil over time, affecting plant health. Therefore, the suitability of hard water for irrigating crops depends on the specific mineral composition and concentration.

Conclusion:
Based on the analysis, the correct statements are:
1. Hard water is not suitable for drinking.
2. Hard water is not suitable for washing clothes with soap.
Therefore, the correct answer is option B - 2 and 3.
