I think it has a lot to do with tradition — that literature has been there for so long. And also snobism and elitism. Reading usually requires more time and concentration than for example films, which can make it harder to enjoy the experience, especially these days.
Literature certainly offers a huge amount of knowledge that has been collected throughout the centuries of writing it, however, people who believe that literature is inherently “more intelligent" than other media have probably an old fashioned view of understanding perception of art in general. Of course, it is probably “easier" to enjoy a videogame than a 600 pages long book concentration-wise but I don’t know about a corrolation between ability to stay focused and intelligence
.
