Ethanol is oxidised to produce ethanal by removing two hydrogen atoms. Ethanal is then oxidised to produce ethanoic acid, by adding an oxygen atom. The O:H ratio changes from 1:6 (ethanol) to 1:4 (ethanal) to 1:2 (ethanoic acid).

Oxidation refers to the process "Adding of Oxygen". In the process of Oxidation, the conversion of Ethanol (C2H5OH) into Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) in the presence of Acidic Potassium di chromate (K2Cr2o7) or the alkaline Potassium permanganate (Kmno4) by adding in the presence of heat.
Or in other words , carbon compounds like alcohol (C2H5OH)
are oxidised into the carboxylic acid in the presence of oxidizing agents like Alkaline Potassium permanganate (Kmno4) or Acidic Potassium di chromate (K2Cr2o7).
Here Kmno4 and K2Cr2O7 are the oxidizing agents. The compounds which adds Oxygen to starting materials are called "OXIDISING AGENTS".
