An application for registration is to be made to the Election Commission for such registration. A political party gets recognition as a national political party when The party wins 2% (i.e. 11 seats in the existing House having 543 members) of seats in the Lok Sabha from at least three different states in the general elections. OR· In the general elections or elections to a State Legislative Assembly, the party secures 6% of the total valid votes cast in at least four states and wins 4 Lok Sabha seats also. As of now in 2015, there are 6 recognised National Parties: Bahujan Samaj Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India Marxist), Indian National Congress and Nationalist Congress Party.
