  • a)
    Photosynthesis
  • b)
    Respiration
  • c)
    Nitrogen fixation
  • d)
    Decay
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A food chain always starts with :-a)Photosynthesisb)Respirationc)Nitro...
All food chains start with energy from the sun. This energy is captured by plants. Thus the living part of a food chain always starts with plant life and ends with an animal. Plants are called producers because they are able to use light energy from the sun to produce food (sugar) from carbon dioxide and water.

A food chain always starts with :-a)Photosynthesisb)Respirationc)Nitro...
The correct answer is Photosynthesis

Key Points

  • 1)  Primary Energy Source:
A food chain starts with the primary energy source, usually the sun or boiling-hot deep-sea vents.

  • 2) Autotrophs:
The next link in the chain is an organism, that makes its own food from the primary energy source - an example is photosynthetic plants, which make their own food from sunlight (using photosynthesis) and chemosynthetic bacteria, that make their food energy from chemicals in hydrothermal vents.
  • These are called autotrophs or primary producers.

  • 3) Photosynthesis:
For plants, the energy is obtained from the sun, this energy will be utilized by plants for the production of food by the process called photosynthesis.

    So plants are called producers.

  • They prepare food by themselves and they won’t depend on other organisms for food. So they are placed in the first trophic level of the food chain.

Additional Information

  • 1) Primary Consumers: The animals which depend on plants are said to be primary consumers and they are also called herbivores, this comes under the second trophic level
. Some of the examples of herbivores are cows, goats, etc.

  • 2) Secondary Consumers: The animals which consume herbivores as their food are said to be secondary consumers and they are also called carnivores, this comes under the third trophic level.

3) Tertiary Consumers:
The animals which consume plants, herbivores, and carnivores are said to be tertiary consumers, they come under the fourth trophic level.

  • 4) Decomposers: The apex of the food chain is occupied by decomposers, they prey on all organisms but there are no predators for decomposers. During this process, the energy is transferred from one level to another and some energy is lost and will never be reused by plants.
