Process of obtaining food by amoeba
The process of obtaining food by amoeba is called phagocytosis.
Phagocytosis
Phagocytosis is the process by which amoeba captures and ingests food particles from its environment. It is a type of endocytosis where the cell membrane folds inwards to form a vesicle around the food particle. The vesicle is then pulled into the cytoplasm and fused with a lysosome, where the food is digested.
Steps involved in phagocytosis
- Chemotaxis: Amoeba moves towards the food particle with the help of pseudopodia.
- Recognition: Amoeba recognizes the food particle through chemical signals and receptors on its surface.
- Attachment: The pseudopodia surround the food particle and attach to it.
- Engulfment: The pseudopodia fuse to form a vesicle around the food particle.
- Internalization: The vesicle is pulled into the cytoplasm by the movement of microfilaments and microtubules.
- Fusion: The vesicle fuses with a lysosome, which contains digestive enzymes.
- Digestion: The food particle is broken down by the enzymes and its nutrients are absorbed by the cytoplasm.
- Excretion: The waste products are eliminated from the cell through exocytosis.
Significance of phagocytosis
Phagocytosis is vital for the survival of amoeba as it provides the necessary nutrients for growth and reproduction. It is also an important process in the immune system of higher organisms, where specialized cells called phagocytes engulf and destroy bacteria and other pathogens.
