Absorption for controlling gaseous pollutant

Absorption is a process of controlling gaseous pollutants from the air. In this method, the pollutants get absorbed into a liquid or solid material. The absorption process can be used to remove pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide from industrial processes and vehicle exhausts.

Working of Absorption

The absorption method works by passing the polluted gas through a liquid or solid absorbent material. The absorbent material captures the pollutants in its pores or on its surface. The polluted gas gets purified, and the clean air gets released into the atmosphere.

Types of Absorption

There are two types of absorption techniques used for controlling gaseous pollutants:

1. Wet Scrubbing: In this technique, the polluted gas gets passed through a liquid scrubber that contains the absorbent material. The pollutants get absorbed into the liquid, and the clean air gets released into the atmosphere.

2. Dry Adsorption: In this technique, the polluted gas gets passed through a solid absorbent material. The pollutants get adsorbed onto the surface of the absorbent material, and the clean air gets released into the atmosphere.

Advantages of Absorption

- Works effectively in removing gaseous pollutants
- Can be used for both indoor and outdoor air quality control
- Has a high efficiency rate
- Is a cost-effective method of controlling gaseous pollutants

Disadvantages of Absorption

- Requires proper maintenance of the absorbent material
- The process can produce waste products that need to be disposed of properly
- The process can be energy-intensive

Conclusion

Absorption is an effective method of controlling gaseous pollutants. This method is widely used in industries and vehicles to remove pollutants from exhausts. Both wet scrubbing and dry adsorption are effective techniques for removing pollutants from the air. However, proper maintenance and disposal of waste products are necessary for the effective functioning of the absorption process.
