Steps of Glycolysis:
Glycolysis consists of ten enzymatic steps that can be divided into three major phases:

1. Energy-Investment Phase:
- Glucose, a six-carbon sugar, is phosphorylated by ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to form glucose-6-phosphate.
- Glucose-6-phosphate is then rearranged to form fructose-6-phosphate.
- Fructose-6-phosphate is phosphorylated by ATP to form fructose-1,6-bisphosphate.

2. Cleavage Phase:
- Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate is cleaved into two three-carbon molecules: dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P).
- DHAP is converted into G3P, resulting in two molecules of G3P.

3. Energy-Generation Phase:
- G3P is oxidized and phosphorylated, producing two molecules of 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate.
- 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate is converted into 3-phosphoglycerate.
- 3-phosphoglycerate is converted into 2-phosphoglycerate.
- 2-phosphoglycerate is converted into phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP).
- PEP is then converted into pyruvate, generating ATP through substrate-level phosphorylation.

Conversion of Pyruvate:
Pyruvate, the end product of glycolysis, can be further metabolized in different ways depending on the presence or absence of oxygen:

- In aerobic conditions, pyruvate enters the mitochondria and is converted into acetyl CoA through a process called pyruvate decarboxylation. Acetyl CoA then enters the Krebs cycle for further ATP production.
- In anaerobic conditions, pyruvate is converted into lactate or ethanol, depending on the organism. This process is called fermentation.

Therefore, the end product of glycolysis is pyruvic acid or pyruvate.
