It is the innermost one celled thick made up of columnar epithelial cells. It lies on a basement. These cells are active & continuously produce new cells by mitotic division that is why called germinative layer or stratum germinativum. The division rate of these cells in highest during sleep or rest and lowest during muscular activity  & stress.

Stratum Malpighii/Stratum Germinativum
The layer of actively dividing cells of the skin is called the stratum malpighii, also known as the stratum germinativum. This layer is crucial for the regeneration and renewal of the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin.

Functions of Stratum Malpighii/Stratum Germinativum
- Cell Division: The cells in this layer undergo rapid division to replace old and damaged cells in the epidermis.
- Keratinocyte Production: The primary cell type in this layer is keratinocytes, which produce the protein keratin essential for skin strength and protection.
- Melanocyte Production: Melanocytes, responsible for skin pigmentation, are also found in this layer.
- Attachment to Basement Membrane: Cells in the stratum malpighii are attached to the basement membrane, providing structural support to the skin.

Location
The stratum malpighii is located between the basal lamina of the basement membrane and the stratum granulosum in the epidermis.

Characteristics
- It is the thickest layer of the epidermis.
- Contains stem cells that give rise to different types of skin cells.
- Acts as a barrier against environmental factors and pathogens.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the stratum malpighii, or stratum germinativum, is a vital layer of the skin responsible for cell renewal and maintenance of skin integrity. Its active cell division ensures the continuous regeneration of the epidermis, providing protection and functionality to the skin.
