When the AC voltage is positive, the diode becomes forward biased and conducts current through it. When the AC voltage is negative, the diode becomes reverse biased and no current flows through it. As a result, the output voltage across the load is a pulsating DC voltage with a ripple that depends on the load and the input frequency.
