Given Information:

Standard cell voltage, Vₚ = 1.0185 V
Balance length with standard cell, l₁ = 60 cm
Balance length with unknown emf, l₂ = 82 cm

To Find: Magnitude of unknown emf

Solution:

Let the unknown emf be Vᵤ.

The potential gradient along the slide wire potentiometer is given by:
V/l = Vₚ/L
where,
V = Potential difference along the wire
l = Length of the wire
L = Total length of the wire

Using the above relation, we can find the potential difference along the wire when the standard cell is connected.

When the standard cell is connected, the potential difference along the wire is given by:
V₁/l₁ = Vₚ/L
=> V₁ = l₁ Vₚ/L

When the unknown emf is connected, the potential difference along the wire is given by:
V₂/l₂ = Vₚ/L + Vᵤ/L₂
=> V₂ = l₂ Vₚ/L + l₂ Vᵤ/L₂

At balance condition, V₁ = V₂
=> l₁ Vₚ/L = l₂ Vₚ/L + l₂ Vᵤ/L₂
=> Vᵤ = (l₁ - l₂) Vₚ/(L - L₂)

Substituting the given values, we get:
Vᵤ = (60 - 82) × 1.0185/(100 - 82) = -0.2211 V

Note: The negative sign indicates that the unknown emf is opposing the potential difference produced by the standard cell.

Therefore, the magnitude of unknown emf is:
|Vᵤ| = |-0.2211| = 0.2211 V

Rounding off to two decimal places, we get:
Magnitude of unknown emf = 0.22 V

Hence, option (A) 1.39 V is incorrect. Option (B) 0.75 V, option (C) 13.9 V, and option (D) 7.45 V are also incorrect.
