3 years ago, the average of a family of 5 members was 17 years. A baby...
Answer – B (2 years) Explanation – Total age of 5 members, 3 years ago = (17 x 5) years = 85 years Total age of 5 members now = (85 + 3 x 5) years = 100 years Total age of 6 members now = (17 x 6) years = 102 years Age of the baby = (102 – 100) years = 2 years

3 years ago, the average of a family of 5 members was 17 years. A baby...
At the time 3 years ago
avg of 17 years was for 5 people in a family , so by formula 》mean= sum of obsv/no. of obsv
so here
mean =17,
sum of obsv = x,
no. of obsv = 5,
>> 17=x/5
x= 85 ( this is the sum of ages of all 5
people)
*now at time 3 years later
the increase in age of each of the 5 members will be three and there will be addition of age of new born baby, let it be (z).
Here no. of obsv increases to 6 .
But average remains same i.e. 17

so here ,
mean =17,
sum of obsv = (85+(3*5)) + z,
no. of obsv = 6,

>> 17 = (85+15+z)/6
17*6 = 100 +z
102 = 100+ z
z = 102 - 100
z = 2 yrs

I hope this helps ^_^
