Solution:

Given, the cricketer's average after playing 20 innings is 55.

Let X be the runs scored by the cricketer in the next inning.

To increase the average to 57, the total runs scored by the cricketer in 21 innings should be (21 × 57) = 1197 runs.

The total runs scored by the cricketer in 20 innings is (20 × 55) = 1100 runs.

Therefore, the cricketer should score (1197 - 1100) = 97 runs in the next inning to increase the average to 57.

Hence, the correct option is (c) 97.
