Let the minimum score = x
∴ Maximum score = x + 100
∴ x + (x + 100) = 40 x 42 – 40 x 38
⇒ 2x + 100 = 1680 – 1520 = 160
⇒ 2x = 160 – 100 = 60
⇒ x = 30
Maximum score = x + 100 = 30 + 100 = 130

Given Information:
- Average runs scored in 42 innings = 40
- Difference between maximum and minimum score in an inning = 100
- Average score of remaining 40 innings (after excluding the two innings) = 38

Calculating Total Runs:
- Total runs scored in 42 innings = 40 * 42 = 1680

Calculating Total Runs Without the Two Innings:
- Total runs scored in 40 innings = 38 * 40 = 1520

Calculating Runs Scored in the Two Innings:
- Runs scored in the two innings = 1680 - 1520 = 160

Calculating Maximum Runs:
- Let the maximum score in an inning be x
- According to the given information, x - (x - 100) = 160
- Solving the equation, we get x = 130
Therefore, the maximum runs scored by the cricketer in an innings is 130. Hence, the correct answer is option B) 130.
