Activity to demonstrate the production of carbon dioxide from metal carbonates and metal bicarbonates with acids

Materials required:

  • Bunsen burner

  • Test tubes

  • Delivery tube

  • Measuring cylinder

  • Copper carbonate or sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate

  • Dilute hydrochloric acid

  • Lime water

Procedure:

  1. Take a test tube and add a small amount of copper carbonate or sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate to it.

  2. Take another test tube and add dilute hydrochloric acid to it.

  3. Now, place the test tube containing the carbonate/bicarbonate above the test tube containing the acid, such that the two do not mix.

  4. Attach a delivery tube to the test tube containing the carbonate/bicarbonate, and place the other end of the tube in a measuring cylinder filled with water.

  5. Heat the test tube containing the carbonate/bicarbonate gently with a Bunsen burner flame.

  6. Observe the reaction and note the volume of gas collected in the measuring cylinder.

  7. Now, add a few drops of lime water to the gas collected in the measuring cylinder.

  8. If the lime water turns milky, it indicates the presence of carbon dioxide gas.

Explanation:

When a metal carbonate or metal bicarbonate reacts with an acid, it produces carbon dioxide gas. The gas is collected in the measuring cylinder and can be identified by adding a few drops of lime water. If the lime water turns milky, it indicates the presence of carbon dioxide gas.

,, take a boiling tube and put about 0.5 gram of sodium carbonate in it second about 2 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid in the boiling tube and third we will observe a diet brisk effervescence of a gas is produce and for all the gas through lime water the lime water turns milky and V keep on passing carbon dioxide gas through lime water for some time the lime water become clear again this shows that the white precipitate of calcium carbonate on passing excess of carbon dioxide
