At present, 189 states plus Taiwan are parties to the NPT. These include all five declared Nuclear Weapons States (NWS) which had manufactured and exploded a nuclear weapon before 1967: China, France, the Russian Federation, the UK and the USA. The main countries remaining outside the NPT are Israel, India and Pakistan, though North Korea has moved to join them.

- China developed its first nuclear weapon in 1964 and tested its first nuclear device in 1966.
- China is a member of the UN Security Council and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.

France:

- France developed its first nuclear weapon in 1960 and tested its first nuclear device in 1962.
- France is a member of the UN Security Council and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.

India:

- India is the world's second-most populous country and the fifth-largest economy.
- India developed its first nuclear weapon in 1974 and tested its first nuclear device in the same year.
- India is not a signatory to the NPT but is recognized as a Nuclear Weapons State.

Israel:

- Israel is a country in the Middle East and is the world's only Jewish-majority state.
- Israel is believed to have developed nuclear weapons in the late 1960s or early 1970s, but it has never officially confirmed or denied having nuclear weapons.

Pakistan:
