The annual range of temperature in the interior of the continents is h...
The first statement is correct as we all know. One major factor affecting the distribution of the temperature of Earth is distribution of Land and Oceans. Since there is more land in Northern Hemisphere and more waters in Southern hemisphere and there is a big difference between the specific heat of land and water; the loss of heat from the continents is bigger than the oceans. The continents get heated faster and get cooled faster in comparison to the Oceans. This is the reason that the temperatures of the Oceans are moderate while that of continents is extreme. The moderating effect on temperature of the land due to proximity of the seas is called Maritime influence. The increasing effect on temperature of the land at interior of the continents is called Continental Influence. In the above question, the statement 2 is framed as a wrong statement, statement 3 is also a wrong statement and statement 4 is also a wrong statement.

Understanding Temperature Ranges: Interior vs. Coastal Areas
The significant difference in the annual temperature range between the interior of continents and coastal areas can be primarily attributed to the following reasons:
1. Thermal Difference Between Land and Water
- Land Heats and Cools Faster: Land surfaces absorb heat more quickly during the day and lose it more rapidly at night compared to water bodies.
- Temperature Extremes: This leads to higher highs and lower lows in temperatures in continental interiors, creating a larger annual temperature range.
2. Variation in Altitude Between Continents and Oceans
- Influence of Elevation: While altitude can affect temperature, it is not a primary reason for the annual range difference between coastal and continental areas.
- Less Impact: Many coastal areas are at sea level, while interiors may have varying altitudes, but this factor does not significantly contribute to the temperature range comparison.
3. Presence of Strong Winds in the Interior
- Wind Patterns: Strong winds can influence local climates, but they do not play a major role in creating a high temperature range in the interior compared to coastal areas.
- Limited Relevance: Winds may cause temperature fluctuations but do not substantially affect the overall temperature range.
4. Heavy Rains in the Interior as Compared to Coasts
- Precipitation Patterns: Coastal areas often experience more consistent rainfall due to proximity to oceans, which can moderate temperatures.
- Not a Major Factor: Heavy rains in the interior may occur, but they do not explain the broader temperature range compared to coastal regions.
Conclusion
Therefore, the correct answer is option 'A' (1 only) as the primary reason for the high annual temperature range in continental interiors is the thermal difference between land and water.
