Chromosome count in an apple with monosporic type of embryo sac development

Megaspore Mother Cell (MMC):
- The MMC undergoes meiosis to produce four haploid megaspores
- Chromosome count in MMC is 2n (diploid) as it is a somatic cell
- Therefore, the MMC in this apple will have 2n = 34 chromosomes

Functional Megaspores:
- Out of the four megaspores produced by MMC, only one survives and develops into the functional megaspore
- The functional megaspore undergoes mitotic divisions to form the embryo sac

- Therefore, the functional megaspore in this apple will have n = 17 chromosomes

Egg Cells, Synergids, and Antipodals:
- The embryo sac in the apple will have three antipodal cells, two synergids, and one egg cell
- Chromosome count in the egg cell, synergids, and antipodal cells is n (haploid) as they are formed by mitotic divisions of the functional megaspore
- Therefore, the egg cell, synergids, and antipodal cells in this apple will have n = 17 chromosomes each

Zygote:
- After fertilization, the egg cell and sperm cell fuse to form the zygote
- Chromosome count in the zygote is 2n (diploid) as it is formed by fusion of two haploid gametes
- Therefore, the zygote in this apple will have 2n = 34 chromosomes

Polar Nuclei (PEN):
- Before fertilization, the two polar nuclei in the embryo sac fuse to form the PEN
- Chromosome count in the PEN is 2n (diploid) as it is formed by fusion of two haploid nuclei
- Therefore, the PEN in this apple will have 2n = 34 chromosomes
