Syngman Rhee, Korea’s first elected president had to resign, aft...
Syngman Rhee was a prominent political leader and the first President of South Korea. He was born on March 26, 1875, in Hwanghae Province, which is now part of North Korea. Rhee played a significant role in shaping South Korea's early political landscape and its relationship with the United States.

Rhee studied in the United States and became a strong advocate for Korean independence during the early 20th century. He actively participated in the March 1st Movement in 1919, which called for the end of Japanese colonial rule in Korea. Rhee's activism led to his exile from Korea by Japanese authorities.

After spending many years abroad, Rhee returned to Korea following its liberation from Japanese rule in 1945. As a prominent anti-communist figure, Rhee became the leader of the newly-established South Korean government in 1948. Under his presidency, South Korea underwent significant political and economic transformations.

Rhee's presidency, however, was not without controversy. His authoritarian style of governance, coupled with allegations of corruption, led to widespread protests and opposition. In 1960, a popular uprising resulted in Rhee's resignation and the end of his presidency.

Despite his controversial tenure, Rhee is often credited with laying the foundation for modern South Korea. He played a crucial role in establishing the country's democratic institutions and promoting economic development. Rhee passed away on July 19, 1965, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
