Well the direction doesn't depend whether it is a circle or ellipse. What we need is a closed loop. So Lenz law states that the magnetic field created because of the induced current will oppose the original magnetic field. If the magnetic field is uniformly coming out of the plane induced current will be in clockwise direction and if magnetic field is uniformly going in to the plane the induced current will be in anti clockwise direction.
