Under the National Waterways Act of 2016, the Government has committed to developing 111 designated National Waterways (NW).
The Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) on NW-1 (Varanasi to Haldia) is being implemented with the financial and technical support of the World Bank. The project entails the development of fairway with 3 meters depth between Varanasi and Haldia. So, statement (1) is not correct.
Recently, Prime Minister of India inaugurated India’s second Multi-Modal Terminal on Ganges river at Sahibganj in Jharkhand, first being at Varanasi. It is on NW-1 which is between Allahabad (Prayagraj) in Uttar Pradesh and Haldia in West Bengal. So, statement (2) is not correct.
The Multi-Modal terminal at Sahibganj will open up industries of Jharkhand and Bihar to the global market and provide Indo-Nepal cargo connectivity through waterways route. It will play an essential role in the transportation of domestic coal from the local mines in the Rajmahal area to various thermal power plants located along NW -1. Other than coal, stone chips, fertilisers, cement and sugar are other commodities expected to be transported through the terminal.
As per the RITES Report of 2014 on Integrated National Waterways Transportation Grid, it costs Rs. 1.36 per Tonne-km on railways, Rs. 2.50 on Highways and Rs. 1.06 on Inland Waterways thus, making Inland Water Transport the cheapest freight transport mode. So, statement (3) is correct.
The State of Goa is having two operational National Waterways – NW-68 on Mandovi River between Usgaon Bridge to the Arabian Sea and NW-111- Zuari River between Sanvordem bridge to Marmugao port. So, statement (4) is correct.
