An electric kettle has two heating coils. When one of the coild is connected to an a.c. source, the water in the kettle boils in 10 min. When the other coil is used, the water boils in 40 min. If both the coils are connected in parallel, then time-taken by the same quantity of water to boil will be
  • a)
    4 min
  • b)
    25 min
  • c)
    15 min

Given information:
- An electric kettle has two heating coils.
- Time taken by one coil to boil water = 10 min.
- Time taken by the other coil to boil water = 40 min.

To find:
- Time taken to boil the same quantity of water when both coils are connected in parallel.

Solution:
When one coil is used, it takes 10 min to boil the water. Let's assume that the power of this coil is P1.
Similarly, when the other coil is used, it takes 40 min to boil the water. Let's assume that the power of this coil is P2.

Let's calculate the power of each coil:
Power = Energy / Time
The energy required to boil the same quantity of water is the same in both cases. Let's assume it is E.
So, for the first coil, P1 = E / 10
And for the second coil, P2 = E / 40

When both coils are connected in parallel, the effective power is the sum of individual powers:
P = P1 + P2
P = E / 10 + E / 40
P = 5E / 40
P = E / 8

Now, let's calculate the time taken to boil the water with this effective power:
P = E / T
T = E / P
T = E / (E / 8)
T = 8 min

Therefore, the time taken to boil the same quantity of water when both coils are connected in parallel is 8 min.

Answer: (d) 8 min
