Consider the following statements regarding Ocean deoxygenation:(1) It...
During the COP25 summit in Madrid, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released its latest comprehensive report titled “Ocean deoxygenation: everyone's problem” that compiles the current evidence for the ongoing, man-made decline in the oceans’ oxygen levels. So, statement (3) is correct.
The loss of oxygen from the oceans is known as Ocean deoxygenation. The ocean loses oxygen at the surface of the water column due to the outgassing of oxygen to the atmosphere in over-saturated waters and from the surface to depths of the water column due to the respiration of aerobic organisms and oxidation of reduced chemical species. So, statement (1) is correct.
The loss of oxygen in the ocean has two primary causes:
● Climate Change: As the ocean warms due to global warming, it induces Ocean warming driven deoxygenation. Warmer ocean water holds less oxygen and is more buoyant than colder water. This leads to reduced mixing of oxygenated water near the surface with deeper waters (deeper waters naturally contain less oxygen). Warming of bottom waters may result in enhanced destabilisation of methane gas hydrates, leading to enhanced release of methane from sediments.
● Nutrient pollution (Eutrophication): It causes oxygen loss in coastal waters as fertiliser, sewage, animal and aquaculture waste cause excessive growth of algae, which in turn deplete oxygen as they decompose. The coastal area that becomes deoxygenated is because of high biological production from over-enrichment by high nitrogen and phosphorus loads. Oxygen loss from warming has alarming consequences for global oceanic oxygen reserves, which have already been reduced by 2% over just 50 years (from 1960 to 2010). Long-term ocean monitoring shows that oxygen concentrations in the ocean have declined during the 20th century and the new IPCC 5th Assessment Report (AR5 WG1) also predicts that it will decrease by 3-6% during the 21st century in response to surface warming. So, statement (2) is correct.
Therefore, the correct answer is (d).

Consider the following statements regarding Ocean deoxygenation:(1) It...
Was published stating that ocean deoxygenation is occurring at a faster rate than previously thought.

All three statements are accurate.

(1) Ocean deoxygenation refers to the loss of oxygen from the oceans. This can lead to areas of low oxygen, known as hypoxic or dead zones, which can be harmful to marine life.

(2) Climate Change is one of the significant causes of ocean deoxygenation. The warming of the oceans due to climate change can reduce the solubility of oxygen, leading to lower oxygen levels. Eutrophication, on the other hand, is the excessive input of nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus) into the oceans, often from human activities like agriculture and wastewater discharge. This can result in algal blooms, which consume oxygen when they decompose, leading to oxygen depletion in the water.

(3) Recently, a report was published stating that ocean deoxygenation is occurring at a faster rate than previously thought. This report highlights the urgency of addressing the issue and implementing measures to mitigate the causes and consequences of ocean deoxygenation.
