Human Respiratory System
The respiratory system is responsible for supplying oxygen to the body and getting rid of carbon dioxide. This process is carried out by the lungs, which are the main organs of the respiratory system. The human respiratory system consists of the following parts:
Nose and Mouth
The nose and mouth are the entry points for air to enter the respiratory system. The nose contains tiny hairs called cilia, which help to filter out dust and other particles from the air. The mouth also plays a role in filtering out particles, but to a lesser extent than the nose.
Pharynx and Larynx
After air enters through the nose or mouth, it passes through the pharynx and larynx. The pharynx is a tube-like structure that connects the nose and mouth to the esophagus and larynx. The larynx contains the vocal cords, which are responsible for producing sound.
Trachea and Bronchi
The trachea, also known as the windpipe, is a tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi. The bronchi are two tubes that branch off from the trachea and lead to the lungs.
Lungs
The lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system. They are located in the chest and are protected by the rib cage. The lungs are divided into lobes, with the right lung having three lobes and the left lung having two lobes. The lungs are responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood.
Alveoli
The alveoli are tiny air sacs located in the lungs. They are responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood. Oxygen from the air enters the bloodstream through the walls of the alveoli, while carbon dioxide from the blood enters the alveoli to be exhaled out of the body.
Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a muscle located at the bottom of the chest. It plays a crucial role in breathing by contracting and expanding to help the lungs fill with air.
