Tropic movements refer to the directional growth responses of plants to external stimuli such as light, gravity, touch, and water. There are two types of tropic movements:



  • Positive Tropic Movements - growth towards the stimulus

  • Negative Tropic Movements - growth away from the stimulus



Reversibility of Tropic Movements


Tropic movements are mostly irreversible because:



  • Permanent Changes - Tropic movements are usually associated with permanent changes in the plant's structure. For instance, phototropism, which is the growth of a plant towards light, results in permanent changes in the plant's stem, leaves, and roots. The cells in the elongating region of the stem that are exposed to light become larger and elongate more than those in the shaded region, resulting in the bending of the stem towards the light. This change is irreversible.

  • Structural Changes - Tropic movements are brought about by structural changes that occur in the plant cells, which are usually irreversible. For instance, thigmotropism, which is the growth of a plant in response to touch, is brought about by the release of hormones that cause the affected cells to grow faster than the non-affected ones. This results in the bending of the plant towards the direction of the touch. The structural changes that occur in the plant cells during thigmotropism are usually irreversible.

  • Energy Requirements - Tropic movements require a lot of energy from the plant. Therefore, once the stimulus is removed, the plant may not have enough energy to reverse the structural changes that have occurred in response to the stimulus. For instance, gravitropism, which is the growth of a plant in response to gravity, requires a lot of energy from the plant. If the plant is turned upside down, it may not have enough energy to reverse the structural changes that have occurred in response to gravity.



Therefore, most tropic movements are irreversible because they are brought about by permanent changes in the plant's structure, structural changes that are usually irreversible, and the high energy requirements associated with the movements.
