Separation of Sand and Iodine by Sublimation

Sublimation is a process in which a solid substance directly converts into a vapor state without going through the liquid state. This method is used to separate a mixture of two solids, one of which can undergo sublimation.

Steps involved in the separation of sand and iodine by sublimation are as follows:

1. Take a mixture of sand and iodine in a china dish.

2. Heat the china dish slowly. As the temperature rises, iodine starts to sublime and convert into a vapor state.

3. The iodine vapor condenses on the cooler parts of the china dish, forming black crystals.

4. Once all the iodine has sublimed, the remaining sand can be separated from the dish.

5. The black crystals of iodine can be collected using a spatula.

6. The collected iodine crystals can be further purified by recrystallization.

Conclusion

Sublimation is an effective method for separating a mixture of sand and iodine. This process can be used to separate other mixtures of solids as well, provided one of the components has the property of sublimation.
