Siraj-ud-daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, captured the Fort William in 1756. The British prisoners were lodged in a prison room in the fort. Out of the 146 prisoners, only 23 survived the next morning when the prison room was opened, the rest having trampled one other down for places near the window.
