**Sodium Hydrogencarbonate as an Antacid**

*Sodium hydrogencarbonate*, also known as *sodium bicarbonate* or *baking soda*, is commonly used as an antacid to relieve symptoms of acid indigestion, heartburn, and upset stomach. It works by neutralizing excess stomach acid, providing quick relief and restoring the normal pH balance in the digestive system. Let's explore the reasons why sodium hydrogencarbonate is an effective antacid in detail.

**Neutralization of Stomach Acid**

- Stomach acid, also known as gastric acid, is produced by the stomach to aid in the digestion of food. However, an excessive amount of stomach acid can cause discomfort and lead to conditions like acid reflux and heartburn.
- Sodium hydrogencarbonate acts as a base and can neutralize excess stomach acid. When it reacts with the acid, it forms water, carbon dioxide gas, and a salt called sodium chloride. This reaction is represented by the following equation:
- NaHCO3 + HCl → NaCl + H2O + CO2
- The release of carbon dioxide gas during this reaction can provide relief from symptoms like bloating and belching.

**Restoring pH Balance**

- The stomach has a naturally acidic environment, with a pH ranging from 1.5 to 3.5. However, when the acid levels become too high, it can lead to discomfort and irritation.
- Sodium hydrogencarbonate helps restore the normal pH balance in the stomach by neutralizing excess acid. Its alkaline properties raise the pH level, reducing the acidity and relieving symptoms.
- By bringing the pH back to a more neutral range, sodium hydrogencarbonate creates a more favorable environment for proper digestion and reduces the discomfort caused by excessive acid.

**Ease of Administration**

- Sodium hydrogencarbonate is available in various forms, such as tablets, powders, and effervescent tablets, making it easy to administer.
- Tablets and powders can be dissolved in water and consumed orally, providing quick relief from symptoms.
- Effervescent tablets, when dissolved in water, create a fizzy solution that can be easily consumed, and the effervescence can aid in the release of trapped gas in the digestive system.

**Considerations and Precautions**

- While sodium hydrogencarbonate is generally safe to use as an antacid, it is important to follow the recommended dosage and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or worsen.
- Prolonged or excessive use of sodium hydrogencarbonate can disrupt the natural acid-base balance in the body, leading to metabolic alkalosis.
- Individuals with conditions such as kidney disease, high blood pressure, or edema should exercise caution and seek medical advice before using sodium hydrogencarbonate as an antacid.

In conclusion, sodium hydrogencarbonate is an effective antacid due to its ability to neutralize excess stomach acid, restore the normal pH balance, and provide quick relief from symptoms. However, it is essential to use it responsibly and seek medical advice when necessary.

Explain why, sodium hydrogencarbonate is used as an antacid.
sodium bi carbonate is basic in nature. when it comes in contact with an acid it reacts with it and neutralises the acid. An antacid is a substance taken by a person suffering from acidity. the antacid contain a mild base which neutralises the excess HCl in the stomach. Sodium bi carbonate being a basic salt is thus used in antacids
