CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. CITES works by subjecting international trade in specimens of selected species to certain controls. All import, export, re-export and introduction from the sea of species covered by the Convention has to be authorized through a licensing system. Each Party to the Convention must designate one or more Management Authorities in charge of administering that licensing system and one or more Scientific Authorities to advise them on the effects of trade on the status of the species. The species covered by CITES are listed in three Appendices, according to the degree of protection they need.

Explanation:

Statement 1: Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

This statement is correct. The main objective of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is to ensure that international trade does not threaten the survival of wild animals and plants. It works towards regulating and monitoring the trade of endangered species to prevent their exploitation and decline.

Statement 2: The species covered by CITES are listed in two Appendices, according to the degree of protection they need.

This statement is also correct. CITES lists species in two Appendices based on the level of protection they require:

1. Appendix I: This appendix includes species that are threatened with extinction and are or may be affected by international trade. Trade in specimens of these species is strictly regulated and permitted only under exceptional circumstances. The aim is to prevent their exploitation and restrict trade to scientific research or conservation purposes.

2. Appendix II: This appendix includes species that are not necessarily threatened with extinction but may become so if their trade is not regulated. Trade in specimens of Appendix II species is regulated to ensure their survival and sustainability. Permits are required for their export or import, and trade is monitored to prevent overexploitation.

The two Appendices provide a framework for controlling international trade in endangered species and ensuring their conservation and sustainable use.

Conclusion:

Both statements 1 and 2 are correct. CITES aims to protect wild animals and plants from the threats posed by international trade, and it lists species in two Appendices based on the level of protection they require. Therefore, the correct answer is option A) 1 only.
